Product Detail

Crown was Seiko's early 1960's line designed to compete with Omega and other Swiss makers of dress watches intended to be worn on leather straps. These watches were entirely in-house productions down to the last screw and hour marker and were powered by Seiko's excellent, 19-jewel Calibre 560 movement.

Measuring 33mm in diameter, not counting the crown, it wears much larger on the wrist thanks to a narrow bezel in combination with a dial that edges out all the way to the bezel. It takes an 18mm strap and is 44mm long from lug to lug and only 8mm thick.

The dial is marked "Seiko Crown" and "Diashock 19 Jewels". Diashock is the Seiko trademark for their shock-resistant mechanism, using a floating balance wheel jewel. Balance wheels are one of the heaviest parts in a mechanical watch, and their rapid motion requires the least resistance, and therefore the thinnest pinions. This means that a big fall can bend the pinions and thus damage the watch. These anti-shock mechanisms work by allowing the jewel to 'float' under a spring, and a thicker part of the pinion to hit against a guard, rather than putting the pressure on the ends of the pinion, and the spring then pushes the balance wheel back into position, and thus saving the watch.

A lot of these watches had gold-plated hour markers or hands or both.

One good thing about a caseback this tight and stable is that it will be no problem for a watchmaker to reseal it against moisture every time it is serviced.

The Seiko watch designers did an admirable job of making an unassuming dress watch that could compete with Omega and others when they made the Crown. It represents a good opportunity to own something different from the ubiquitous Swiss brands and yet built to the highest standards of quality so that it was a milestone in the company's history

This is a vintage used watch. It has lived a life before you, so you should not expect it to be new and flawless. If you want a flawless new watch, please do not buy this.  If you want a piece of history in the form of a nice vintage piece, or possibly a dated inscription on the case back, then this may be right for you. Because most vintage watches being offered are between 30-70 years old, small imperfections, scratches, and wear are to be expected

Buying a pre-owned watch is like buying a pre-owned car....it is all about condition, condition, condition!

Water resistance is not guaranteed on vintage or pre-owned watches unless otherwise stated in the listing

Please note that all pictures are taken on the macro setting. This makes even the slightest imperfections, shadows during photography, and specks of dust appear much more prominent even though they are often not visible without magnification

A careful shopper who takes the time to study the photos, reads the entire description, and asks pertinent questions is our best customer

You will be pleasantly surprised and receive many compliments when wearing your watch. There is nothing that draws attention quite like a stunning watch

Because older vintage wristwatches were made smaller than watches made today, men or women can wear this and would look fabulous on your wrist
