Cartier [CAR-TEE-EH]
Founded in 1847 in Paris by Louis-François Cartier as a jewelry store, they designed watches and clocks which were then made for them by other manufacturers. As a son of the original founder, Louis Cartier created several designs for wristwatches which did much to establish the brand’s fame.
The Santos and the Tank models, the former created in 1904 and the latter in 1917, were among the first and most iconic wristwatch designs ever produced. These were largely manufactured by the European Watch and Clock Co. (an early formation of Jaeger-LeCoultre). Later, Cartier watches would be made by Tavannes, Wittnauer, Universal, Patek Philippe, Movado, and ETA.
The company remained under family control until 1964, and is currently owned by the Richemont Group
